It was clear that the child did not understand the articles, so I think you should have taught the meaning and usage of the articles first, and then given the test. When you realize what your child is tripping over, you should stop the lesson, teach them, and start the test again. Children don't like the sound of mistakes.
Even if it's not the curriculum, having fun for the kids is a priority.
